Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

things to take care of:

  • buy a bed.
  • find a roommate.
  • pick out paint colors. honestly, i need to check myself on this. i keep leaning towards a turquoise on royal blue scheme. looks a lot like those 1989 jordans, you know, the one’s with the webbing and all high-top like? man, i’m gonna make my apartment look like a pair of sneakers. must remind self, you stink at picking out colors.
  • go to houston for an ikea run.
  • finish my school work, the many many hours that it’ll take.
  • work on that paper that i’m been laying on for two months.
  • proof-read the content for the consulting gig
  • sell my playstation2, which i’ve turned on a total of once in the past two years
  • inch up the running slowly.
  • learn spanish. i know, i know, i’ve only been saying this for the past 18 years.
  • ramp up my knowledge of cancer for the new volunteer project i’m down with. and also start to learn more about hiv too.
  • get that cash
  • finish up that tattoo
  • plan a housewarming party. (hint: here’s the date-July 29th)
  • start bumping up the yoga, especially ashtanga before running season begins again this fall
  • move forward in the walk with God, especially because it’s so easy to get stagnant when things go well
  • change my oil
  • make $2Gs appear out of nowhere so I can rock those nice 22″ rims
  • find a girl that makes my knees buckle
  • check that swagger and remember to stay humble
  • write that book about the true struggle of humanity and asian gangsters who like to cook gourmet tofu and roll with kate winslet
  • fix my silly laptop’s screen, which looks ultra-trippy right now
  • consolodate the various investment accounts at fidelity
  • figure out what the heck’s going on with my yoga alliance teacher certification
  • cook you some dinner and rock your world, kid.

been a long time

i shouldn’t have left you

without a dope beat to step to

———————————–

gosh darn it, i can’t believe it’s been over 2 weeks since i dropped some trouble up here. sorry, faithful readers, i know how much fun it is to read all about the stupid goings on of my life.

lots o’ news.

I just went to richmond, va last weekend for a wedding. What a great time, I got to meet a whole lot of good people, and just feel that delicious southern vibe. I dunno, you know, I really miss the whole mid-Atlantic area. And being over in Richmond reminded me a lot of those fun college times.

Kitchen renovations are kickin my butt. And I’m not really doing anything other than showing up to see how my contractor’s doing. I tell ya, renovations are nothing but headaches, man. Headaches.

But, if your kitchen looked like this, I’m sure you’d spend that cold cash to make it over too.

So, I’m done with my first class of summer school. Wow, what a rush. It was another multicultural discourse class, and this one was focused more on social studies and literacy education, but I really really enjoyed it. And, I have to say, this was the first class about diversity I’ve ever taken where I felt that everyone was respectful about culture and spoke in only positive ways. I didn’t whine about white girls complaining about their black students once. Honest!

Plus, I read a really great book in the class too. Stacey J. Lee’s Unraveling the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. A nice, short read. Not too heady and academic, but just good ethnographic vignettes on Asian American identities among high school students in the U.S.

I found it to be quite personal too. Which is always good, right?

Did I tell ya I went camping the other day? For the first time in my life? (Well, not if you count Father/Son camping in Southern Taiwan back in 1987). Wow, camping really is magical. Waking up to the sunrise. Hearing the rustle of the wind at night. Looking out your tent and seeing all the stars. And just staying up and talking about nothing with all the people. I wanna go again.

Oh, I saw one of my favorite movies in the whole world last week. Outdoors. With a live band! Holy moly, I love this town. Only in Austin do they pull off crap like this all the time. I’ll give you some hints.

1) Written by Roger Ebert

2) Russ Meyer’s only studio film

3) This is my party, and it’s freaking me out!

Yes yes yes, noble patrons of the arts, what other flick could I be talking about. Russ Meyer’s Beyond The Valley of the Dolls.

Gotta be one of my favorite flicks of all time, if only because of it’s frentic, fast-paced style, showing the oozing and lavicious seduction of fame, power, and sex. Ooh, I love it.

But, to tell you the truth, I definately felt older watching it this time around. No longer was I cheering on the over-the-top sleeze, or wishing for more gratuitous zaniness. The first time I saw this movie, I was a sophomore in college, and it was BYOB at the Charles Theater. That must have been 1997 or so. Wow, almost ten years.

This time around, I laughed, I chuckled. I still love the flick. But to be honest, if I saw it for the first time now, it wouldn’t be the same movie. I gotta admit, part of me loves it only for nostalgia.

But it really burns me that a couple of people that I invited out to see the movie with me flipped out a little bit when they found out what it was about. Not just one person, but multiple people. Ahh . . . I guess that’s the trouble with hanging out with good Christian kids, huh? No love for the old ultra-violence.

pain in me gulliver.

——————————

Oh yeah. A couple shout outs.

First, to my man JB. Putting out his big time book. And it’s all about the history of calculus, man. (You gotta say it like Lou Diamond Phillips in a barrio accent. Say it with me, “What the heck is cow-coo-lahs?”) Check, check it out. I’m mad jealous, and reading it now so I can steal all the ideas and pretend they’re mine.

Also to random people finding me outta the blue. DH, after traveling the world, pops up on myspace.

And ol skool homegirl, JSR, also kicking on myspace. Big big ups. I never did finish that silly movie we made.

To P, forever stealing my style. I always know when you’re bored. Cuz that’s the only time you ever text me.
Plus, SL, my best pal. Thanks for always making me feel so special. You’re the hot one, doncha know?

A very special shout to a guy I’m a big fan of. AH, I told you last night you’ve got the gift, and you gotta take it as far as you can. Keep grinding, man. I’m gonna be mad at you if I see you settle for anything less than the best.

And, SC, who reads this but then pretends she doesn’t. I mean it when I say I had a blast this weekend.

much love, kids. hope you celebrated juneteenth, the anniversary of emancipation by remembering the horrific and dark history of our beloved country. the repercussions of slavery and colonization still exists in each and everything we do today. remember that, kids. and fight the power.

everytime a rerun of frasier comes on, i love watching and imagining it’s just a sitcom about the personal life of The Beast! Ha ha! Who knew that The Beast and his brother could have such fun hijinx?

——————————

I have to say it. Hands down, my tattoo artist, not only a duper-dope artist, but probably the coolest person I’ve ever known. Pretty damn cool. And way hard-core, she scares me a little.

Need some good ink? Check out her site, she’s amazing.

Check it out: Color!
